The facility is not intended to be limited to the care of individuals with one specific problem, as the problems encountered with substance or alcohol abuse, HIV infection and other alienating factors, are all part of modern reality and have to be dealt with without increasing the sense of alienation which can arise in a problem specific environment.
Residents will be assisted in following therapeutic procedures, including assistance in adherence to prescribed regimes of medication, whilst being encouraged to participate in the care and nurture of the animals. This area will include the possibility of assisting in the training of suitable animals for the showring, and the possibility of participating in exhibitions and other activities pertaining to the running of a kennel of pedigree dogs. This will include the study of genetics, healthcare, reproduction and rearing of youngsters.
A young person trained here will have an increased possibility of finding permanent employment both here and in other countries. It is envisaged that a rescue facility will be developed for basset hounds in need of assistance
both here and internationally, and it is intended to continue our ongoing research onto health issues, both breed specific and general, particularly with regard to the prevention and management of vector borne diseases such as erlichea, babesia and leishmania, all of which will probably become more important worldwide as the environment necessary to support the vectors spreads because of global warming. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of learning the essentials of autonomous existence, so new skills will be learned and existing ones developed in areas such as food preparation, the growing of fruit and vegetables, and the care of other domestic animals such as chickens, pigs and horses. Instruction in equitation may also be an option.
