There has been much emphasis placed recently on the importance of dogs being fit for purpose. I endorse this necessity wholeheartedly, but my own view is that the basset, whilst in origin a hunting hound, has an equally valid purpose and role in life doing what he does even better than hunting. He teaches us how to love, unconditionally and with no prejudice or restraint. He is nonjudgemental and forgiving, and we can all learn from him.

Whilst it will always give me enormous pleasure to strive to breed morphologically correct animals who are of good breed type and healthy with correct temperaments, it seems to me that I can perhaps make another lasting contribution to the future of the breed by promoting its capacity to heal damaged souls and help them back onto the right path.
Sometimes ridiculed and criticised for his short legs, loose skin and somewhat droopy eyes, a basset can teach us to accept ourselves as we are, and to be happy with what we have.
